NCAA Game Summary - Rutgers at Connecticut

Final Score: Connecticut 40, Rutgers 22

East Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Lyle McCombs ran for 95 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as the Connecticut Huskies upset the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 40-22, in Big East Conference action at Rentschler Stadium.

Scott McCummings added 47 yards and a pair of scores on the ground as well in the win for UConn (5-6, 3-3 Big East), which amassed 178 rushing yards on the afternoon.

Gary Nova completed 11-of-18 for 298 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for Rutgers (8-4, 4-3), but was also responsible for a pair of costly interceptions as well. Chas Dodd saw time under center as well for the Scarlet Knights, completing 11-of-22 passes for 141 yards. Brandon Coleman caught six passes for 223 yards and two scores during the contest, while Mohamed Sanu registered nine catches for 133 yards.

McCombs gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead early in the opening period of play following a 10-yard scoring scamper.

The Huskies made it 14-0 midway through the frame with a five-yard McCummings run.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board early in the second quarter with a 25- yard San San Te field goal.

Kendall Reyes recovered a Dodd fumble midway through the stanza however, returning the loose ball nine yards for a UConn score midway through the frame.

Rutgers pulled to within 21-10 late in the stanza following a one-yard Jawan Jamison plunge, but a 33-yard Dave Teggart kick with one second remaining in the half gave UConn a 24-10 advantage.

The Huskies took a 31-10 lead early in the third period with a four-yard McCombs run, while a 14-yard scoring scamper from McCummings just minutes later extended the UConn lead further.

Teggart hit a 47-yard field goal late in the stanza to make it a 40-10 UConn lead.

A 17-yard toss from Nova to Coleman midway through the final period of play got Rutgers into the end zone again, while a 92-yard strike from Nova to Coleman with just over two minutes remaining represented the final score of the contest.

The Scarlet Knights committed a season-high six turnovers in the loss and forced just one UConn miscue.
