NCAA Game Summary - East Carolina at Texas-El Paso

(Saturday, November 12th)

Final Score: Texas-El Paso 22, East Carolina 17

El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Joe Banyard's 77-yard touchdown run with 7:04 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Miners of Texas-El Paso captured a 22-17 win over the East Carolina Pirates in Conference USA action.

Banyard finished the night with a game-high 140 yards on 18 rushing attempts for the Miners (5-5, 2-4 CUSA) as they snapped a two-game slide. Carson Meger hit on 18-of-27 passes for the hosts, resulting in 155 yards through the air.

The Pirates (4-6, 3-3) were paced by Dominique Davis who connected on 18-of-34 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, but he was sacked twice and also tossed a couple of interceptions in the second setback in as many games.

ECU opened the game's scoring with a two-yard touchdown run by Michael Dobson in the first quarter, but from there the Miners rattled off 16 unanswered points to close out the first half.

The defense made an impact for UTEP as Darren Woodard returned an interception 44 yards for a TD, although the PAT failed which left the home team with a 7-6 deficit with 11:51 to play in the first half. Leilyon Myers put the Miners in the lead with a two-yard TD run, while a Steven Valdez 46-yard field goal with 34 seconds to play in the second quarter made the score 16-7 at the break.

The Pirates battled back and reclaimed the lead in the third quarter thanks to a 10-yard TD pass from Davis to Justin Hardy and a Michael Barbour 19-yard field goal, the latter capping a 16-play, 66-yard drive that ate up almost seven minutes on the clock.

Banyard played the hero for the Miners with his lengthy scoring run and although UTEP failed on a two-point conversion attempt, it still held on for the five-point win.

East Carolina finished the meeting with a mere 254 yards of total offense, a far cry from the team's season average of 409.1 ypg heading into the week.
