(Saturday, September 17th)

Final Score: USC 38, Syracuse 17

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Barkley threw for 324 yards and five touchdowns as he led the USC Trojans to a convincing 38-17 win over the Syracuse Orange in non-conference play at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Barkley, who became the first quarterback in nearly a decade to throw five TDs against the Orange (2-1), converted 26-of-39 passes on the night for the Trojans (3-0). Robert Woods was his favorite target with eight catches for 82 yards and a score in the triumph.

Syracuse was paced by quarterback Ryan Nassib who hit on 25-of-37 for 230 yards and a score, but he was also sacked three times in the setback. Nick Provo collected eight passes for 85 yards for the visitors.

Syracuse actually opened the night's scoring with a 23-yard field goal by Ross Krautman, capping a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ate up close to seven minutes to kickoff the contest.

From there USC ripped off 24 straight points, beginning with TD passes from Barkley to Rhett Ellison (five yards) and Woods (31 yards), with a 26-yard field goal from Andre Heidari late in the second quarter to make the score 17-3 at the break.

In the third quarter the Trojans continued to pile on with a 44-yard TD strike from Barkley to Randall Telfer.

The Orange finally responded at the 10:43 mark of the third frame with a 28- yard TD pass play between Alec Lemon and Van Chew to make the score 24-10.

Barkley accounted for two more passing scores with a 43-yard effort to Marqise Lee in the third and a nine-yard connection with Xavier Grimble early in the fourth period to push the lead to 38-10.

To finish off their next drive, one that extended 86 yards on 13 plays, consuming more than five minutes on the clock, the Orange recorded a 12-yard touchdown pass from Nassib to Lemon, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

USC finished the night a stellar 10-of-14 on third down, allowing the squad to record 501 yards of total offense along the way.

Prior to the game today the Orange made news off the field as they, along with fellow Big East Conference members the Pittsburgh Panthers, tendered letters of application for membership to the ACC as college teams and conferences continued to shift their affiliations.
