Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Taveon Rogers pulled in an eight-yard
touchdown pass as time expired, lifting the New Mexico State Aggies to a
thrilling 29-27 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in a Western Athletic
Rogers finished the game with five catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns for
NMSU (2-6, 1-3 WAC), while Matt Christian was responsible for getting him the
ball with 259 yards and two scores on 23-of-44 tosses. Christian also led the
way on the ground with 74 yards and another touchdown.
Jordan La Secla guided SJSU (1-8, 0-4) with 361 yards and three touchdowns on
22-of-35 pass attempts. His main target was Jalal Beauchman, who pulled in
nine balls for 113 yards and a score.
The Spartans took an early lead after Harrison Waid drilled a 20-yard field
goal a few minutes into the game.
Just over two minutes later, NMSU took the lead with a 31-yard touchdown pass
from Christian to Rogers.
A 28-yard touchdown run by Christian midway through the second quarter and a
42-yard field goal by Tyler Sampler on the last play of the half gave the
Aggies a 17-3 lead at the intermission.
SJSU struck quickly after the break, as La Secla threw a 75-yard touchdown
pass to Brandon Rutley. Harris then drilled a 45-yard field goal, making it a
17-13 game heading into the final quarter.
NMSU pushed its lead back to seven with a 25-yard field goal by Stampler early
in the fourth frame.
The Spartans answered quickly and knotted the score on a 12-yard touchdown
pass from La Secla to Noel Grigsby.
The Aggies would regain the lead on a 43-yard field goal from Stampler before
SJSU went on top, 27-23, with a 31-yard touchdown pass from La Secla to
With just 52 seconds left, NMSU put together an eight-play, 79-yard drive
which was capped with the game-winning eight-yard touchdown pass from
Christian to Rogers as time expired.
