Moscow, ID (Sports Network) - Doug Martin ran for 117 yards and a pair of
scores, as fourth-ranked Boise State continued its quest to top the BCS
rankings with a 52-14 thrashing of in-state rival Idaho to capture the
Governor's Cup once again.
Kellen Moore played only 2 1/2 quarters and threw for 216 yards and three
touchdowns on 19-of-26 passing, as Boise State (9-0, 5-0 WAC) extended the
nation's longest winning streak to 23 behind a strong 28-point first quarter.
The Broncos, despite their impressive victories, dropped two spots in this
week's Associated Press poll after Auburn and TCU both remained unbeaten. They
are also fourth in the BCS poll behind the Tigers and Horned Frogs in addition
to the top-ranked Ducks of Oregon.
Nathan Enderle passed for 118 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions on
16-of-34 efficiency for Idaho (4-6, 1-4), which has lost three straight
overall and 12 consecutive times to Boise State. Kama Bailey ran for 92 yards
on seven carries in the loss.
Idaho never had a prayer from the start of this classic mismatch, as the
Broncos scored early and often to take complete control.
The Vandals went backwards five yards on their opening possession, and Boise
State never had to trot out its offense after the ensuing punt because Chris
Potter returned it 76 yards for a touchdown in the opening minute.
The Broncos intercepted Enderle on the next Idaho series and moved 41 yards in
eight plays, with Martin running in from eight yards away for a 14-0 margin
six minutes into the game.
Boise State tried a surprise onside kick, but the ball bounced out of bounds.
Nevertheless, the Broncos intercepted Enderle again even though Idaho started
at the opposing 29-yard line. On the Vandals' next possession, Boise State
blocked a punt, and Jeremy Avery capped the ensuing series with a one-yard
touchdown run for a 21-0 advantage.
Moore's 58-yard touchdown pass to Titus Young with 56 seconds on the clock in
the opening frame expanded the lead to 28, and Kyle Brotzman made it 31-0 with
a 41-yard field goal with 8:57 until halftime.
Avery caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the first half's final seconds to cap
a sterling 30 minutes for Boise State, and he returned the second half's
opening kickoff 53 yards to the Idaho 47. Two plays later, Martin ran for a
39-yard score to make it 45-0.
The Vandals finally got on the board on Enderle's 17-yard touchdown pass to
Eric Greenwood later in the third, but Moore capped his performance with a 21-
yard scoring pass to Gabe Linehan before he gave way to Joe Southwick under
Southwick was sacked early in the fourth quarter, leading to Aaron Lavarias'
nine-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to account for Idaho's final points.
Boise State leads the all-time series, 22-17-1...Idaho gave up 844 yards of
offense last week to Nevada, while the Broncos set a school-record with 732
yards of offense against Hawaii last week. Boise State needed only 424 yards
on Friday to post the resounding victory. The Vandals recorded 316
yards...Boise State has won 17 straight road games.
