NCAA Game Summary - Oklahoma State at Texas
(Saturday, November 13th)
Final Score: (12) Oklahoma State 33, Texas 16
Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Brandon Weeden threw for 409 yards and a
touchdown, as 12th-ranked Oklahoma State finally topped Texas, 33-16, in the
Longhorns' fourth consecutive home loss.
Weeden completed 29-of-43 passes in his second consecutive 400-yard game and
was intercepted once for the Cowboys (9-1, 5-1 Big 12), who snapped a
lengthy 12-game losing streak to Texas. Kendall Hunter ran for 116 yards
and two touchdowns on 23 carries, and Justin Blackmon caught nine passes for
145 yards and a score in the win.
With the victory, Oklahoma State remained a game ahead of Texas A&M and
Oklahoma in the Big 12 South Division.
"I'm really proud of our football team," said Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy.
"I thought we had a complete game in all three phases. We are starting to play
well in all of the areas that are important in the game. I thought the
assistant coaches did a great job with our game planning. I thought our
offense was explosive. We made some mistakes early, but we rallied."
Garrett Gilbert threw for 202 yards and an interception on 19-of-32 efficiency
for Texas (4-6, 2-5), which has lost four straight at home for the first time
since entering the Big 12 Conference. Cody Johnson recorded 68 yards rushing
and a touchdown on 16 carries, while James Kirkendoll had four receptions for
71 yards in defeat.
"We gave up some big plays on defense. We still couldn't force the amount of
turnovers we wanted," said Texas head coach Mack Brown. "I thought the defense
really hung in there and fought, especially in the second half. We gave up a
couple of big plays, but they fought hard to hang in there."
Each team managed only a field goal in the first quarter, but Oklahoma State
exploded for 23 points in the second to take control.
On the third play of the second quarter, the Cowboys completed an 11-play, 63-
yard drive with Jeremy Smith's six-yard rushing score for a 9-3 lead. The
extra point attempt was blocked.
After a Texas punt, OSU got the ball back on its own 30. Two plays later,
Weeden hit Blackmon with a 67-yard touchdown pass to expand the advantage to
13.
Hunter finished a 59-yard series with a nine-yard score with just 1:15 to
play in the first half, and the Cowboys intercepted Gilbert with 31 ticks left
to set up Dan Bailey's 45-yard field goal for a 26-3 lead at halftime.
Hunter's one-yard rushing touchdown toward the end of the third quarter made
it a 33-3 game before Texas accounted for the final margin with touchdowns
from Johnson and Ryan Roberson in the fourth quarter.
