Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Jeff Tuel threw for 157 yards and one
touchdown to lead the Washington State Cougars to their first Pac-10
Conference win since 2008, with a 31-14 decision over the Oregon State Beavers
at Reser Stadium.
Tuel also led WSU (2-9, 1-7 Pac-10) on the ground with 79 yards, while James
Montgomery added 67 yards and one touchdown.
Ryan Katz threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon State (4-5, 3-3),
but was also intercepted once. Markus Wheaton hauled in both touchdown passes
and finished the game with 97 yards on six receptions. Jacquizz Rodgers led
the ground game for Oregon State, rumbling for 93 yards on 15 carries.
Just seconds into the contest the Cougars took a 7-0 lead on a one-yard
touchdown run by Logwone Mitz.
A one-yard touchdown plunge by Montgomery gave the Cougars a shocking 14-0
lead, which the team took into the intermission.
After halftime the Cougars extended their lead to 21-0 when Tuel hit Marquess
Wilson for a 33-yard scoring strike.
Oregon State finally found the scoreboard midway through the third stanza when
Katz and Wheaton hooked up for a 25-yard scoring strike.
Andrew Furney's 37-yard field goal pushed WSU's advantage to 24-7.
The Beavers continued to fight however, as Katz and Wheaton hooked up once
again, this time for an 11-yard scoring strike.
However, the Cougars were able to maintain and with a little over two minutes
left in regulation Chantz Staden scored on a five-yard run to give WSU its
first road win since 2007.
