San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Max Hall completed 27-of-39 passes for 346
yards and three touchdowns, as 18th-ranked BYU hung on to defeat San Diego
State, 38-28, in a battle between these two Mountain West Conference foes at
Hall also added a rushing touchdown while Andrew George caught four passes for
75 yards and a TD for the Cougars (6-1, 3-0 MWC), who have ripped off four
straight wins. Dennis Pitta hauled in six passes for 72 yards and a score.

Ryan Lindley connected on 21-of-33 passes for 298 yards, three touchdowns, and

Down 35-21, San Diego State was faced with a 4th-and-2 at the BYU six-yard-
line. Lindley dropped back and faked a handoff before finding Alston Umuolo in
the middle of the end zone to make it 35-28 with 8:17 to play.
The Aztecs defense then did their job, forcing BYU to punt the ball away. San
Diego State took over on its own 12 with 5:27 remaining. The Aztecs went
three-and-out and were forced to punt.
Mitch Payne's 44-yard field goal with 2:21 left sealed the victory for the
The Cougars ended their first drive of the game with a one-yard Unga TD
run for a 7-0 lead. The Aztecs responded with a TD of their own to tie the
contest. Sampson's seven-yard touchdown catch with about 4 1/2 minutes left in
the first capped a six-play, 81-yard march.
San Diego State bridged a scoring drive over the first and second quarters to
take the lead. Brandon Sullivan ended the 69-yard drive with a one-yard
rushing TD for a 14-7 margin.
BYU responded with a touchdown to deadlock the tilt with 9:06 left until
half. Bryan Kariya's three-yard TD reception capped off a 12-play, 68-yard
drive that last over five minutes.
The Cougars ended the half with an even more impressive drive. Hall's one-
yard TD run was the 14th play of a 80-yard march that lasted over six minutes
in length. It gave BYU a 21-14 lead heading into the locker room.
BYU got the ball to begin the third and went right down the field. The Cougars
decided to go for it on 4th-and-1 at the San Diego State 23. However, J.J. Di
Luigi got stuffed on a rushing attempt.
The Aztecs' offense used the momentum their defense created by scoring a
touchdown to tie the contest again. Sampson topped off the 77-yard drive with
a 36-yard TD catch with 8:23 left in the third.
The back-and-forth battle continued, as the Cougars scored a TD on their
ensuing possession. A 25-yard Di Luigi reception helped lead to a 19-yard
George TD catch for a 28-21 lead with 3:38 remaining.
BYU put together a key scoring drive that bridged the third and fourth
periods. Pitta's nine-yard TD catch with 14:49 to play made it 35-21. Di
Luigi's 22-yard catch highlighted the seven-play, 77-yard drive.
The Cougars outgained the Aztecs, 512-342...SDSU had just 20 total rushing
yards...BYU won 41-12 against San Diego State last year and leads the all-time
series, 26-7-1...The Cougars host TCU next Saturday, while the Aztecs travel
to Colorado State...Today's victory over San Diego State marked the 500th all-
time win for the BYU football program. The Cougars have a 500-373-26 all-time
record with a .571 winning percentage dating back to 1922.
