Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Pat Pinkney rushed for a pair of touchdowns and
threw for another score, as East Carolina handled Memphis, 38-19, in
Conference-USA action at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Pinkney completed 14-of-26 passes for 216 yards with an interception for the
Pirates (5-3, 4-1 C-USA), who have won four straight versus Memphis. Pinkney
also rushed for 26 yards on two carries.
Darryl Freeney caught five passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Dominique
Lindsay rushed for 139 yards on 22 carries. Giavani Ruffin and Dwayne Harris
each had a rushing TD for East Carolina, which was coming off a 49-13 rout of
Rice on October 17.
Will Hudgens connected on 33-of-48 passes for 313 yards, two touchdowns, and
an interception for the Tigers (2-6, 1-4), who were coming off a 36-16 loss to
Southern Miss on October 17. Duke Calhoun hauled in nine passes for 91 yards.
Marcus Rucker caught five balls for 89 yards and a score, while Carlos
Singleton brought in nine balls for 70 yards and a TD in defeat.
The Pirates set the tone from the beginning, scoring on the first drive of the
contest. East Carolina used its ground game to march down the field, and
Pinkney sneaked into the end zone on a 4th-and-goal from the three to put the
Pirates ahead 7-0.
The Tigers responded with an 11-play, 45-yard drive that Matt Reagan capped
with a 26-yard field goal to cut the gap to 7-3 with 6:17 left in the first.
East Carolina was forced to punt on its ensuing possession, but a Chris Hobbs
fumble on the return gave the Pirates the ball back. Two plays later, Harris
rushed in for a TD from eight yards out for a 14-3 lead with 4:27 left.
A Pinkney 23-yard rushing touchdown early in the second period ended a seven-
play, 70-yard march for a 21-3 game. Singleton's 14-yard TD catch with
43 seconds left until halftime made it 21-10 at the break.
A 45-yard Reagan field goal early in the third cut the margin to 21-13.
However, ECU responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that Ruffin
topped off with a 19-yard TD run to make it 28-13 with 4:30 left.
The Pirates then intercepted a Hudgens pass on the ensuing Memphis drive. East
Carolina capitalized on the turnover when Pinkney hit Freeney with a
31-yard TD pass for a 35-13 lead with 28 seconds to go in the third.
Hudgens' 43-yard TD pass to Rucker and a blocked extra point cut the
deficit to 35-19 with 12:42 remaining in the fourth. Ben Hartman's 48-yard
field goal with about 10 minutes to play accounted for the final margin.
The Pirates hold a 12-6 edge over Memphis in the all-time series, including a
30-10 decision over the Tigers last season. The last Memphis win in the series
was a 27-24 victory in the 2005 campaign.
