NCAA Game Summary - East Carolina at Marshall

(Saturday, October 3rd)

Final Score: East Carolina 21, Marshall 17

Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - Patrick Pinkney's 30-yard touchdown run on the last play of the third quarter proved to be the game-winner, as the East Carolina Pirates slipped past the Marshall Thundering Herd, 21-17, in Conference USA play in Huntington.

Pinkney finished the game with 131 yards and an interception on 14-of-23 pass attempts, as ECU (3-2, 2-0 CUSA) notched its second consecutive win. Dominique Lindsay paced the ground attack for the Pirates with 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Darius Marshall headed the charge for the Thundering Herd (3-2, 1-1) with 141 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Cody Slate had a solid game with nine catches for 88 yards, but quarterback Brian Anderson struggled in throwing for 127 yards with two interceptions.

The Pirates posted the first points of the game when Brandon Jackson capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run late in the opening quarter.

The Herd responded with a drive of 80 yards and 13 plays and it was finished with a Marshall one-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

With 26 seconds left in the first half, ECU went ahead 14-7 courtesy of a three-yard touchdown run by Lindsay.

Craig Ratanamorn pulled Marshall closer on a 28-yard field goal early in the third quarter before Marshall gave the Herd a 17-14 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run late in the frame.

Pinkney, however, gave ECU back the lead on a 30-yard run on the last play of the third quarter and the Pirates' defense would make that stand.

Neither team had all that much success moving the ball, as ECU managed just 286 total yards and Marshall a slightly better 306 yards.
