Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Kriss Proctor, making the first start of his
career at quarterback, ran 40 yards for a touchdown with 11 minutes left in
the third quarter to give the Navy Midshipmen a 13-10 win over the Wake Forest
Demon Deacons in a non-conference game played in heavy rain at Navy-Marine
Corps Memorial Stadium.
Proctor stepped in for Ricky Dobbs, who was out with a knee injury. His
touchdown run was the difference in the game as the Midshipmen (6-2) won their
Proctor, who had played in just one game prior to this week, carried 23 times
for 89 yards. Vince Murray ran for 175 yards for the academy, which did not
throw a pass all afternoon. Last year Navy opted for a similar attack versus
SMU in rainy conditions as well, becoming the first FBS team since Ohio in
1997 to go an entire game without attempting a single pass.
Riley Skinner was 13-of-25 through the air for Wake Forest (4-4), leading to
173 yards and one touchdown. Josh Adams carried 18 yards for 89 yards for the
Joe Buckley got Navy on the board with three minutes left in the first quarter
with a 50-yard field goal. Jimmy Newman's 40-yard boot tied the game at 3-3
just over a minute into the second period before Buckley added a 41-yarder at
the halfway mark that gave Navy a 6-3 halftime advantage.
Proctor's touchdown run extended Navy's lead to two scores.
Skinner hit Devon Brown with a 15-yard pass midway through the fourth period
to cut Navy's lead to three points, but Wake Forest managed just one first
down the rest of the way.
Despite the rain Navy, which entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in
rushing with 279 ypg, rolled up 338 rushing yards and converted nine of 16
