Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Toby Gerhart rushed for 125 yards and one
touchdown, as the Stanford Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 33-14, in a Pac-10
collision at Stanford Stadium.
Stepfan Taylor added 66 yards and one touchdown on six totes for Stanford
(5-3, 4-2 Pac-10), while Andrew Luck completed 17-of-27 passes in the contest,
and finished the game with 236 yards.
As for the Sun Devils (4-3, 2-2), they were led by Danny Sullivan, who threw
for 144 yards and two touchdowns on just 12-of-23 efficiency.
The Cardinal dominated Arizona State through the entire first half of action,
as the team went into the break with a 24-0 advantage.
Stanford opened the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown scamper by Jamal-Rashad
Patterson midway through the first quarter.
The Cardinal then added a 27-yard field goal by Nate Whitaker, pushing their
advantage to 10-0 as the two teams went into the second frame.
In the second stanza, Gerhart rumbled into the end zone from eight yards out
with just over seven minutes remaining in the quarter, and that was followed
by a two-yard touchdown run by Owen Marecic right before halftime.
The Sun Devils came out of the locker room ready to fight back however, and
the team wasted little time cutting into its deficit, as Sullivan connected
with Chris McGaha for an 18-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter.
Stanford pushed ahead by 20 points when Whitaker connected on a 39-yard field
goal early in the fourth quarter.
Arizona State continued to fight, as the Sun Devils cut their deficit to 27-14
with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Sullivan to T.J. Simpson.
The Cardinal responded on their next drive however, as Taylor broke free for a
33-yard touchdown run, pushing Stanford's advantage to 33-14.
Stanford, which has not earned a bowl berth since 2001, is now one victory
away from becoming bowl eligible.
