"I am proud of this team," Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen said. "We
talked at halftime and the end of the game that we will never accept moral
victories. We either win or we get whooped, and in the second half of the game
we got whooped. The players understand that and will come back tomorrow and
It was a tough first half for the Longhorns as the team managed just 13 points
in the first 30 minutes and held a three-point lead to start the second half,
but the team exploded in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Texas started the second half with the ball and put together a quick drive as
D.J. Monroe took the kickoff 41 yards to the Wyoming 40 and, five plays later,
McCoy took the ball in from nine-yards out for a 20-10 lead.
"I was really proud of the score right before the half," Texas head coach Mack
Brown said. "Then the kickoff return to start the second half and we got
the score. The game was really over after that, because our guys kept gaining
confidence and played better."
Later in the third, McCoy avoided the rush, stepped up in the pocket and fired
a pass to Dan Buckner, who raced into the end zone for a 33-yard score and a
27-10 lead with 7:08 to play in the third.
After stopping the Cowboys on their ensuing possession, the Longhorns needed
just 2 1/2 minutes to score again as a seven-play drive was capped by a Newton
13-yard touchdown right up the middle for a 34-10 lead with 3:02 left in the
On a wide receiver screen to the left side, McCoy tossed the ball to John
Chiles, who took it home from 26 yards out for a 41-10 lead with just under
nine minutes to play to cap the scoring.
After holding the Cowboys on their first touch of the game, the Longhorns got
the ball back near midfield and got into the red zone, but had to settle for a
29-yard field goal from Hunter Lawrence.
That was all the scoring in the first quarter as the defenses held tight and
Wyoming was able to tie the game early in the second quarter thanks to its
Texas faced a 4th-and-6 at its own nine-yard-line and elected to go for a fake
punt, but Justin Tucker was stopped a yard short of a first down and Wyoming
took over with the ball at the Texas 14.
However, the Texas defense stood firm and Wyoming had to settle for a 22-yard
field goal from Austin McCoy with 11:19 left in the second.
Just three minutes later, the Longhorns answered with a 32-yard field goal
from Lawrence to take a three-point lead.
The score remained that way for the next several minutes, but Wyoming's
special teams gave the team the lead as Luke Ruff blocked a Texas punt and
Ghaali Muhammad took the ball into the end zone from six yards out for a 10-6
lead with just 92 seconds left in the first half.
However, McCoy marched his team quickly down the field and, with the ball at
the Wyoming 25, he dumped a short pass to Kirkendoll, who caught the ball over
the middle, made a move to get past two defenders and raced into the end zone
to give the Longhorns a 13-10 lead heading into the break.
