NCAA Game Summary - Georgia at Arkansas

(Saturday, September 19th)

Final Score: (23) Georgia 52, Arkansas 41

Fayetteville, AR (Sports Network) - Joe Cox threw for five touchdown passes, matching a Bulldogs record, as 23rd-ranked Georgia defeated Arkansas, 52-41, in an offensive slugfest between SEC foes meeting for the first time since 2005.

Cox totaled 375 yards through the air on 18-of-25 attempts and was picked off once for the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0 SEC), who were coming off a hard-fought win over South Carolina last week. A.J. Green had seven receptions for 137 yards and two scores, while Richard Samuel added an 80-yard rushing touchdown.

"We certainly know how to keep things exciting," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "I was happy with the way our guys went out and competed. I'm so thankful for the heart and spirit of this football team, and it was a spirited victory tonight. I still don't feel like we've reached our full potential, but we're getting there."

Arkansas signal-caller Ryan Mallett set a school record with five touchdowns passes, but it wasn't enough for the Razorbacks (1-1, 0-1), who have dropped the last six meetings to Georgia. Mallet finished with 408 yards on 22-of-39 efficiency.

"Ryan (Mallett) gave us a chance to win the game today," said Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. "He prepared all week and the week before really well. He obviously showed that he can throw the ball well and he showed that he could make some plays."

Greg Childs accumulated 140 yards and two scores on five catches, while Jarius Wright hauled in four balls for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Arkansas was unproductive on the game's opening drive, but caught a break when Georgia's Prince Miller muffed the subsequent punt. The mistake proved costly as Joe Adams hauled in a 18-yard strike from Mallett four plays later to put the Razorbacks on the board.

The Bulldogs quickly countered on their initial offensive series. Cox connected on all three pass attempts, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Aron White five minutes into the contest.

Following a big gain on the ensuing kickoff, Mallett found Wright, streaking down the middle of the field, for a 48-yard score.

Later in the first quarter, Demarcus Dobbs sacked Mallett and dislodged the football. Georgia recovered the fumble, and a Blair Walsh 35-yard field goal trimmed the deficit to 14-10.

After forcing Arkansas to go three-and-out on its next offensive sequence, Samuel failed to corral a backfield toss from Cox. The Razorbacks took over at the Georgia 30 and orchestrated their second one-play drive, with Childs sprinting down the right sideline and making a spectacular diving catch in the end zone.

In the early moments of the second stanza, the Bulldogs struck on the ground as Samuel atoned for his earlier gaffe with a lengthy 80-yard touchdown run.

On Georgia's next drive, Cox and Michael Moore connected for a six-yard completion on 4th-and-2 from the Arkansas 31. On the very next play, Cox hit Green over the middle. He bounced off a defender and rumbled into the end zone.

Walsh drilled a 37-yard field goal to cap off the second quarter and give the Bulldogs a six-point advantage, 27-21.

After Georgia was forced to punt on the opening drive of the third frame, the clubs traded points on five consecutive series.

Arkansas regained the lead early in the second half when Mallett threw a 40- yard strike to Childs. Cox countered with a 50-yard TD toss to Tavarres King, but that was answered by a two-yard scoring reception by Arkansas' D.J. Williams.

Cox and Orson Charles then hooked up for a 44-yard score. A penalty wiped out a two-point conversion. Walsh's extra point gave the Bulldogs a 42-35 lead.

The Razorbacks trimmed their deficit to 42-38 on Alex Tejada's 23-yard field goal with 80 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Green's second touchdown grab -- this time from 28 yards out -- extended the lead to 11 early in the final frame.

Tejada and Walsh exchanged field goals to account for the final score.
