NCAA Game Summary - North Texas at Alabama

(Saturday, September 19th)

Final Score: (4) Alabama 53, North Texas 7

Tuscaloosa, AL (Sports Network) - Greg McElroy threw two touchdowns and rushed one in as fourth-ranked Alabama crushed North Texas, 53-7, at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

McElroy went 13-for-15 with 176 yards while Terry Grant had 19 carries for 79 yards with two scores for the Crimson Tide (3-0), who begin SEC play next Saturday when they will host Arkansas. Mark Ingram had eight carries for 91 yards and a score and added three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown while Trent Richardson carried the ball 11 times for 88 yards and a touchdown.

"We got to play a lot of players and the experience will be very valuable for them down the road relative to our depth," said Alabama coach Nick Saban. "Obviously, when we put some two's in one defense, they made a couple big plays and made some mental errors, but they'll learn from those things and we?ll get better and that?s the kind of game experience we need."

Nathan Tune went 16-for-23 with 126 yards and a touchdown and Lance Dunbar had two catches for 40 yards and a score for the Mean Green (1-2), who have dropped their past two games after opening the season with a win against Ball State.

As expected, it was all Crimson Tide from the start of the game.

After holding the Mean Green to a three-and-out, Alabama smartly moved down the field in a 13-play drive that covered 95 yards and was capped on a McElroy two-yard touchdown run with 7:47 to play in the first.

North Texas failed to move the ball on its next touch and Alabama took advantage as McElroy connected with Marquis Maze on a 34-yard score for a 14-0 lead with under three minutes to play in the first frame.

On its first possession of the second quarter, Alabama went 83 yards in five plays with Richardson punching the ball in from a yard out for a 21-0 lead a bit over three minutes into the second.

The Tide got another score later in the second quarter as McElroy and Ingram hooked up on a 29-yard score. The extra-point attempt was missed and it was 27-0.

On the last play of the first half, Leigh Tiffin hit a 35-yard field goal to give Alabama a 30-0 lead heading into the break.

Alabama held North Texas to a three-and-out to start the second half and got excellent field position thanks to a 36-yard punt return from Javier Arenas. Three plays later, Ingram got the ball into the end zone on a five-yard run for a 37-0 lead.

Grant's one-yard touchdown run later in the third gave the Crimson Tide a 44-0 lead, but the Mean Green answered on their ensuing score as Tune's 34-yard touchdown toss to Dunbar got the team on the board.

A 20-yard field goal from Tiffin early in the fourth quarter and a Grant nine- yard touchdown run, with another failed point-after attempt, later in the fourth accounted for the final score.
