Lafayette, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alonzo Harris rushed for 106 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns used a dominating second-half effort to take down the New Mexico State Aggies, 49-35, in non- conference action at Cajun Field.
Harris did his damage on 16 carries, while Elijah McGuire (six carries, 72 yards, TD) also had an effective afternoon rushing for Louisiana (6-2). Terrance Broadway completed 14-of-20 passes for 231 yards, a touchdown and an interception while adding 28 rushing yards as well.
For New Mexico State (1-8), Andrew McDonald was 24-of-34 for 327 yards with three touchdowns and a pick under center while also adding a rushing score. Austin Franklin had a career-high 13 receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
NMSU got off to a fast 14-0 start in the first quarter on a pair of McDonald touchdowns. First the signal caller capped off an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard scoring rush, then he hooked up with Franklin on a 65-yard touchdown pass less than five minutes later.
Louisiana put an end to the Aggies' run on the very first play of its ensuing drive, as Broadway completed a 68-yard touchdown pass to Darryl Surgent to cut the Cajuns' deficit in half.
The Aggies would add one more touchdown before a busy first quarter was out, with McDonald hooking up with Travaughn Colwell for a 36-yard touchdown.
NMSU's early domination continued at the 9:23 mark of the second quarter, as it extended its lead to 28-7 following a one-yard touchdown run by Xavier Hall. The Cajuns answered on the next possession with a 10-play, 61-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown rush by Alonzo Harris.
The Cajuns took control after intermission with 28 unanswered points, all of which came via rushing touchdowns. Harris rushed in a six-yard score at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter (the extra-point attempt failed), then McGuire ripped off a 51-yard touchdown run less than three minutes later to bring the Cajuns to within one.
Louisiana took a seven-point lead following a five-yard touchdown rush by Harris and the ensuing successful two-point conversion at the start of the fourth quarter. After a NMSU turnover, Harris converted a three-yard score just 30 seconds later.
The Aggies made things interesting with 2:23 left following a seven-yard scoring strike from McDonald to Franklin, but Louisiana put the game away on the next possession with a 30-yard scoring scamper by Harris.
The teams were well-matched in terms of total yardage. NMSU finished with 450, while Louisiana tallied 440.
