GAME NOTES: First-round action in the College Basketball Invitational Tournament continues Wednesday night with a matchup featuring the Summit League's South Dakota State Jackrabbits traveling to face Conference USA's Old Dominion Monarchs at the Constant Convocation Center.
The winner of this first-round meeting will advance on to the quarterfinal round of the tournament, and will get to face the winner of Radford and Oregon State on March 24.
South Dakota State endured a solid season in the Summit League this year, registering a 10-4 record in the conference and earning a trip to the semifinal round of the league tournament. The Jackrabbits were defeated in the semifinals of the Summit League tourney by IUPU-Fort Wayne, 64-60.
Old Dominion had a mixed season, going on win streaks of four games in a row on two separate occasions, but lost six straight in between those win streaks. The Monarchs were bounced from the Conference USA Tournament in the quarterfinal round by Middle Tennessee, 62-48.
This game between South Dakota State and Old Dominion will represent the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
Fort Wayne grabbed a six-point lead over South Dakota State at the end of the first half in the Summit League semifinal matchup between the sides, which served as just enough for the Mastodons to hold off the Jackrabbits. SDSU shaved off two points from the IPFW first-half lead, but couldn't make up any more ground. Brayden Carlson led the Jackrabbits with 19 points in the contest, adding three steals and an 8-of-10 mark from the free-throw line to his resume. Chad White scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss, in which South Dakota State shot 44.9 percent.
Jordan Dykstra, who netted nine points and grabbed five rebounds in the loss to IPFW, leads the team in scoring entering the CBI Tournament with a 16 ppg average, also topping the squad in rebounding at 7.7 rpg. Carlson is second on the team with 15.1 ppg, and has a team-best 90 assists with 45 steals. Cody Larson rounds out the double-digit scorers with 13.1 ppg, shooting a Jackrabbits-high 52 percent from the floor. South Dakota State is netting 72.6 ppg and giving up just 68.6 ppg to opponents.
It was a slow day offensively for Old Dominion in the contest against Middle Tennessee, as the Monarchs fell behind at the end of the first half, 30-19, after ODU hit just 27.6 percent of its shot attempts in the period. The second half didn't get a whole lot better, as the Monarchs connected on just 37 percent of their tries from the floor. Ambrose Mosley scored a team-high 13 points in the loss, while Richard Ross contributed 12 with eight rebounds and Keenan Palmore netted 10. Old Dominion as a unit registered just five assists in the game, and turned the ball over eight times.
Aaron Bacote was held scoreless in the game against Middle Tennessee, yet the guard still brings a team-leading 16.1 ppg average into the CBI Tournament with an ODU-best 92 assists. Dimitri Batten chips in 10.6 ppg, and Keenan Palmore contributes 10 ppg for the Monarchs, who average 63.4 ppg as a team. Ross tops the squad in rebounding at 7.1 rpg, and has blocked a team-best 77 shots in 33 games played. ODU's offense isn't the most prolific, but the Monarchs' 64.5 ppg allowed to opponents has gotten the job done this season.
Old Dominion has the benefit of playing at home in this contest, but the edge belongs to South Dakota State, which boasted one of the top starting lineups in the Summit League and a top-notch scoring offense. With well-rounded play underneath the basket and good outside range, the Jackrabbits should be able to advance on the road.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Dakota State 73, Old Dominion 64
