Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Isaiah Taylor scored 14 points and handed out eight assists as the Texas Longhorns outlasted the Vanderbilt Commodores, 70-64, as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge at the Erwin Center.
Demarcus Holland and Javan Felix each added 12 points for Texas (7-1), which also got 11 points and six rebounds from Kendal Yancy.
Eric McClellan had a game-high 22 points for Vanderbilt (4-3). Josh Henderson tacked on 12 points off the bench and Rod Odom tallied 11 points to go with six rebounds.
Neither team was particularly impressive in the first half. Texas hit on just 37.5 percent of its field goal tries but did sink 4-of-10 from beyond the arc to claim the 31-25 edge at the break. Vanderbilt shot at just a 33.3 percent rate in the first 20 minutes.
Texas connected on just 12-of-23 attempts from the free-throw line after halftime, which allowed the Commodores to hang around. However the Longhorns turned in a 54.2 percent shooting effort during the period as well. The Commodores, who shot at a 41.2 percent clip during the frame, cut their deficit to a single point with 33 seconds to play. Felix then notched a pair of free-throws and, after a McClellan turnover, Holland hit a shot in the lane to seal the win for Texas.
The Longhorns controlled the boards by a count of 41-35 and outscored the Commodores, 32-26, in the paint. Both teams scored 16 points off turnovers.
