GAME NOTES: The San Diego Toreros and Alcorn State Braves meet up in the Big Easy, as the two teams continue play in the Hoops for Hope Classic this evening at Fogelman Arena.
The Toreros opened up play in this event with a 64-56 win over New Orleans on Friday. The win was the third in the first four games for San Diego, which will close out play in this event on Sunday against host Tulane.
The Braves were not so fortunate in their first-round matchup on Friday, falling hard to the Green Wave, 83-41. The loss was the third straight for Alcorn State, which closes out tournament play on Sunday against New Orleans.
This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams on the hardwood.
Ken Rancifer and Chris Manresa both recorded double-double, powering the San Diego Toreros to an eight-point victory over New Orleans on Friday. Rancifer finished the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Manresa tallied 11 points and 10 boards for San Diego (3-1), which also received 10 points from Darian Norris. Through four games, the Toreros are averaging just under 70 points per game (69.8), but allowing a mere 63.2. Johnny Dee is the top offensive threat for San Diego, averaging 15.8 ppg. Manresa is next in line at 13.8 ppg and leads the team with 10.5 rpg.
JaMichael Hawkins was the only player in double-figures for Alcorn State, as he finished with 12 points. The Green Wave went into the break with a 33-18 lead after holding the Braves to a meager 23.8 percent shooting effort over the first 20 minutes. Tulane pull away in the second stanza, shooting 59.3 percent from the floor. Alcorn State was beat up down low, getting outscored in the paint, 38-14 and being outrebounded 42-27. Not much has gone right in the early stages of the season for the Braves, as the team came into this event, shooting 3.9 percent from the floor and netting just 65 points per game.
The Braves have struggled to generate offense and could be in for another beating with the way Manresa and company are playing right now.
