GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between South Dakota and the Phoenix of Green Bay takes place on Saturday evening at the Resch Center.
South Dakota heads into the meeting winless in four true road dates so far in 2012-13, although the Coyotes did defeat NCCU on a neutral floor by double figures last month. More recently, the team was in action on Wednesday when it tackled Morehead State in non-conference action, 85-75, at home. The win snapped a three-game slide by South Dakota.
As for Green Bay, since opening the campaign with back-to-back wins over Chicago State and Southern Utah, the team has gone on to take just two of its subsequent nine contests. Three nights ago, the Phoenix stunned Marquette in a narrow 49-47 final at home in order to halt a four-game slide.
Against Morehead State, the Coyotes dialed up the defense, holding the visitors to just 37.8 percent shooting from the floor, allowing South Dakota to come away with the double-digit win. On offense, Juevol Myles erupted for a game-high 32 points, shooting 15-of-16 at the free-throw line, followed by Karim Rowson who made good on all but three of his attempts at the charity stripe as he finished with 17 points. Brandon Bos and Steve Tecker chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively, adding six rebounds apiece as well. The leading scorer for the Coyotes in two straight and four of the last six outings overall, Myles is producing 16.1 ppg to pace the group, although his mere 38.5 percent accuracy from the floor is not quite up to snuff. However Myles, who is first on the unit with 44 assists and 19 steals, has connected on a staggering 90.4 percent of his chances at the charity stripe as the team outscores the competition at the line by a margin of 74 points through 12 games.
In a game that featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, Green Bay picked the right time to be out in front as the team slipped by the Golden Eagles of the Big East Conference by a scant two points. Keifer Sykes led the way for the hosts with his 20 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Greg Mays tacked on 11 points, five boards and three of the unit's four blocked shots. Green Bay, which outscored Marquette at the charity stripe by a 12-4 margin, picked up the victory despite shooting only 38.6 percent from the field and 3- of-8 beyond the arc. Sykes continues to be the leading scorer overall for the Phoenix with his 16.7 ppg and is also first with 36 assists which serves to keep his teammates involved in the action. Alec Brown checks in with 10.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg which means he is the only other active double-digit scorer, what with Brennan Cougill (12.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg) being listed as out of action due to a suspension.
Even though Green Bay might be shorthanded again, the team proved it can win close games against talented opponents, which is why this meeting with South Dakota should go rather smoothly.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Green Bay 63, South Dakota 57
