GAME NOTES: The Old Dominion Monarchs shoot for their first road victory of the season as they match up against the Cougars from the College of Charleston at TD Arena on Tuesday night.

In addition to this being the first-ever meeting between the two schools, this is also an opportunity for the Monarchs to finally bring an end to a lengthy eight-game slide that started a day after the team posted its lone win of the campaign, a 72-61 final versus Morgan State on Nov. 10. More recently, ODU was in action on Friday against UCF and was turned back in a 75-71 decision.

Meanwhile, the Cougars have a brief losing streak of their own to deal with, having dropped back-to-back dates after opening the month of December with a 56-54 win against Elon on the road in the Southern Conference opener. Last week, the team hosted Anderson University and bowed to the visitors in a 65-49 outcome.

Old Dominion was at home once again against UCF in the last outing, but it still didn't matter as the hosts found themselves outscored at the free-throw line by a 19-12 margin, more than enough to send the Monarchs to yet another loss. Aaron Bacote, who was recently named the Rookie of the Week in the Colonial Athletic Association, produced a team-best 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting behind the three-point line, followed by Donte Hill and DeShawn Painter with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Hill, the only player to have started all 10 games for the team, is second in the scoring department with 10.1 ppg even though he has shot just 39.8 percent from the floor and 27.3 percent behind the three-point line, not to mention a disappointing 63.4 percent at the free-throw line as well. Painter (10.5 ppg) paces the group in scoring and is also tops on the glass with almost seven and a half per game, which has helped provide ODU with a rebounding advantage of 6.9 rpg.

After losing to nationally-ranked Louisville in the previous outing, the Cougars probably thought they'd have an easier time against Anderson, but instead Charleston found itself with a loss against a non-Division I program for the first time in more than a decade. Adjehi Baru tried to keep the hosts in the mix as he recorded his third career double-double, the second of this season, as he posted a team-high 11 points and game-high 14 rebounds in the losing cause. Nori Johnson came off the bench and contributed 10 points to register his ninth career game in double digits, but the Cougars were destined to struggle as they shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the floor. Not only is the team scoring just 58.7 ppg at this point in the campaign, they might also be without their leading scorer, Andrew Lawrence (12.4 ppg) who has missed a couple of games already with injury. Also missing in action is Trent Wiedeman who, after three games, was one of the leading scorers with 11.7 ppg, but now the Cougars are simply in disarray as they try to put together a lineup that works.

After their performance against Anderson the last time out, it is difficult to picture the Cougars as a favorite in this outing, but when you consider how poorly ODU has performed it only makes sense that the hosts get a vote of confidence.
