GAME NOTES: The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets eye a fifth straight win on Saturday when they welcome the Fordham Rams in a non-conference matchup at McCamish Pavilion.
Georgia Tech continued its strong start to the season last Saturday with a dominating win over The Citadel, as Kammeon Holsey scored a game-high 14 points in a 73-41 rout. The Yellow Jackets, who have won 8-of-10 to begin the year, made of nine of their first 13 shots and raced out to a 20-3 lead.
Marcus Georges-Hunt added 12 points for Georgia Tech, which also got nine points and 10 rebounds from Robert Carter Jr. The Yellow Jackets had a collective effort as 13 different players saw the floor and 10 of them managed to score at least two points.
Fordham, meanwhile, won for the second time in three tries on Sunday against Siena, as Chris Gaston scored 25 points and Branden Frazier tallied 20 points and 10 assists in an 81-75 win. Bryan Smith also added 15 points for the Rams, who had opened the year with losses in seven of their first eight games.
This will be just the fourth meeting between the schools, as Georgia Tech holds a 2-1 advantage in the previous three contests. Fordham, though, beat the Jackets last season.
Fordham was red-hot from the floor against Siena, as the team connected on 20- of-29 shots in the first half and hit a season-high 58.5-percent for the game. The Rams also controlled the boards for the fifth straight game, outrebounding Siena, 32-19, including 13 offensive rebounds. Fordham is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 13.0 rpg over the past five games. The Rams dished out a season-high 20 assists in the game and have 37 assists over the past two games. Frazier's total was the most by a Fordham player since Jio Fontan dished out eleven against Xavier in 2009. He leads the team with 16.8 ppg and 5.1 apg. Gaston is averaging 17.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg in his last three games after missing the previous six with a knee injury. He's averaging 14.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg for the game.
Georgia Tech has held its opponents to 53.6 points per game, second-best in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets have held two foes under 40 points and have held their last two opponents to 41 points each and a collective 25.2 percent field goal percentage. Tech has held four opponents under 50 points this year and three under 30 percent field-goal percentage. Its opponents have shot 35.2 percent from the floor collectively, the third-best figure in the ACC. Six different players have led Tech in scoring this season, and eight different players have scored in double digits. Tech has two players averaging in double figures for the season in Georges-Hunt (11.5) and Holsey (10.0). Mfon Udofia (9.9) and Robert Carter (9.9.3) are close behind. No Tech player has scored as many as 20 points in a game this year. Reed and Carter have each scored 19 at one point.
Although Fordham has looked better of late, it has still yet to win in six games on the road and will be clearly outmatched on Saturday against a tough Georgia Tech team that hasn't lost on its home floor.
