Final Score: Columbus 3, Portland 3
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Gaston Fernandez scored five minutes from time to salvage a point for the 10-man Portland Timbers on Saturday in a wild 3-3 draw with the Columbus Crew at Providence Park.
Portland got off the mark quickly in front of the home fans, finding the back of the net after just five minutes when Steve Zakuani played Max Urruti through on goal and the Argentine fired it past Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark.
But Columbus drew level in the 14th minute as Hector Jimenez found Federico Higuain with space in the middle of the park. Higuain picked up his head and chipped a beautiful strike over the head of Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and into the bottom left corner.
Things became more difficult for the Timbers in the 34th minute when defender Alvas Powell was sent off for a rash challenge on Columbus' Chad Barson, and the visitors took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Higuain completed a brace with a penalty conversion.
The match really opened up in the final 10 minutes and the hosts made it 2-2 with 10 minutes to play when Will Johnson's strike from inside the area took a deflection and beat Clark.
But less than a minute later the Crew took the lead again, this time the deflection worked in favor of the visitors as a strike from Ethan Finlay hit Timbers defender Mamadou Danso and beat Ricketts.
Despite falling behind late on, the Timbers rallied for another equalizer in the 85th minute as a free kick from Diego Valeri was flicked on by newcomer Fanendo Adi and it fell to the feet of Fernandez, who made no mistake from close range.
The result leaves the Timbers second from the bottom in the Western Conference with 10 points, while Columbus moves to sixth place in the East with 13 points.
