NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Ottawa
(Saturday, December 14th)
Final Score: Los Angeles 5, Ottawa 2
Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Anze Kopitar lit the lamp twice as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Ottawa Senators, 5-2, at Canadian Tire Centre.
Dwight King and Jeff Carter both contributed a goal and two assists as the Kings rolled on to their sixth straight win. The Kings also have not allowed a first-period goal in 18 straight games, an NHL record.
"We wanted everyone's first shift to be a really good one ... To get that one early and get three early, that was huge for our team and huge for our confidence," said Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty.
Jarret Stoll tallied the other Los Angeles goal and Martin Jones turned aside 37 shots in the victory.
Joe Corvo and Erik Karlsson both scored for Ottawa. Craig Anderson allowed two early goals and was replaced by Robin Lehner, who stopped 19-of-22 shots fired his way.
"We are trying to be a better team at home. To lose this game takes a little bit of momentum away from us," said Ottawa captain Jason Spezza.
The Senators have dropped two of their last three.
Los Angeles struck quickly, scoring 21 seconds into the game. King wristed a shot from the left circle after receiving an outlet pass from Carter.
Less than four minutes later, Carter made it 2-0. King tied up an Ottawa defender in the corner and slid a pass back to Carter at the left circle. Carter quickly fired a shot through the pads of Anderson and into the back of the net.
Ottawa failed to clear their zone and conceded a third first period goal. Kopitar scored on Lehner off the rebound from a Slava Voynov slapshot at 12:56.
The Senators got on the board with just over six minutes left in the second. Spezza fired a shot from the right side. Cory Conacher kicked the rebound over to the left circle for Corvo to blast past Jones.
Karlsson wristed a shot past a screened Jones at 4:24 of the third for his ninth of the season to get Ottawa within one.
The Kings added two more goals to seal the win. Doughty drove up through the neutral zone and raced in on Lehner. Stoll was there to knock in the rebound at 13:18 and Kopitar added his second of the day at 16:42 while on the power play.
Jones is perfect in his five career starts ... The Kings swept the season series with the other decision being a 4-3 overtime win coming on Oct. 9 ... Los Angeles is 5-2-0 in their last seven games in Ottawa, with its last visit on Nov. 22, 2010.
