Redskins bring in Neil Rackers
Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins have brought in Neil Rackers to compete with Graham Gano for the kicking job in 2012.
FOX-26 Sports in Houston said Rackers, who spent the past two seasons with the Texans, has agreed to a one-year deal with Washington.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, briefing the media on the team's draft plans Wednesday, confirmed the acquisition.
"We had a chance to get a guy who was a proven kicker," Shanahan said. "There's no promises ... and he wasn't afraid to come in and compete. We'll let the best guy win the position."
Rackers connected on 32-of-38 field goal tries and all but one of his 40 PATs for the Texans last season. He has made 80 percent of his field goal attempts in a 12-year career playing for Cincinnati, Arizona and Houston.
Gano was just 31-of-41 on field goals last year and had five of them blocked. The 25-year-old native of Scotland joined the Redskins in December of 2009 and has connected on 73.8 percent of his field goal tries.
