National League Game Summary - Washington at Arizona
(Tuesday, May 13th)
Final Score: Arizona 3, Washington 1
Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Bronson Arroyo allowed just a run on seven hits to guide the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
Arroyo (4-2) issued just one walk while striking out seven for Arizona, winners in five of its last seven. Of Arroyo's 110 pitches, 79 went for strikes, as the 37-year-old veteran got through his first complete game of the year. He has gone the distance 16 times in his career and at least once per season since 2006.
"It's nice. We needed this tonight for a lot of reasons," said Arroyo. "We've been struggling pitching at home, but we started to turn the corner as a staff a bit, giving a lot more quality starts."
Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and two RBI in the triumph. Arroyo also had a pair of hits and scored a run.
Arroyo outdueled Washington ace Stephen Strasburg (3-3), who yielded all three runs on eight hits over seven frames. Ian Desmond drove in the lone Nationals run.
"I think the biggest thing is to keep it close," said Strasburg. "Keep us within one or two runs. I threw a lot of strikes tonight, Arroyo just pitched better."
A pair of singles led to Goldschmidt's eventual game winner in the fifth. Arroyo helped his own cause with a single to right, then, after Gerardo Parra flied to center, Prado reached on a single to set the stage for Goldschmidt, who delivered a two- run double to center.
The Nationals put two on in the top of the eighth on singles by Nate McLouth and Anthony Rendon, but Jayson Werth popped to left to end the threat.
Arroyo capped his evening by retiring the visitors in order in the ninth.
The Nats scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Wilson Ramos singled to start the frame and Desmond ripped a liner over second baseman Aaron Hill that rolled all the way to the wall in right center for a triple.
Miguel Montero knotted the score two innings later when he followed Goldschmidt's double with a single to center. Strasburg responded by striking out the side.
Arizona has a chance to win its first home series of the season on Wednesday ... Arroyo has allowed one run in his last 23 1/3 innings ... Washington ended up 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, while Arizona finished 2-for-7.
