Mariners end skid on Seager's late homer
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Seager's three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the Seattle Mariners to snap an eight- game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Houston Astros.
Josh Fields (0-1) came on to pitch for Houston in the ninth and allowed a leadoff single to Robinson Cano before Corey Hart followed with a single of his own on a grounder to left. Fields struck out Justin Smoak, but Seager came up to the plate and crushed the first pitch he saw over the right-field wall to win the game.
"The most demoralizing win in baseball is a late-inning loss when you have the game won. Since I've been here, we have had our share of them," said Astros manager Bo Porter.
Seager drove in all five of Seattle's runs, also hitting a two-run homer in the seventh. Fernando Rodney (1-1) spun a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win.
Mariners starter Chris Young allowed three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and five walks across seven innings.
"You can't say enough about Seager and the way he's been battling, the way he's been grinding," said Young. "He is a true professional. He picked us up today with a much-needed win and that's awesome to see."
Jason Castro drove in two runs with a double and Chris Carter stroked a solo homer for the Astros, who had won six straight against the Mariners entering the game.
Houston starter Jarred Cosart lasted 6 2/3 innings, surrendering just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
The Astros started the scoring in the third. Young walked Matt Dominguez to lead off the inning and also gave a free pass to Dexter Fowler with two outs. Castro's line-drive double made it a 2-0 game.
Seager walked and Nick Franklin singled on a ground ball to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Seager moved to third after Dustin Ackley grounded into a double play. He was left stranded after Cosart got Mike Zunino to fly out in foul territory.
Carter smacked a fastball over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season to lead off the seventh and make it a 3-0 game. Two batters later, Jonathan Villar hit a flyball that bounced off the warning track and over the wall for a standup ground-rule double. He then moved over to third on Jose Altuve's groundout, but was left stranded after Fowler flied out to left.
Seager got the Mariners on the board with a two-run blast to make it 3-2 in the home half of the seventh. With one out gone, Smoak singled on a line drive to left and then Seager worked an 11-pitch at-bat and 3-2 count to bring him home.
Seattle's last walk-off win came against Oakland on June 23 last season when Kendrys Morales hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning ... The Mariners are now 6-1 when hitting multiple home runs in a game ... Hart extended his hitting streak to seven games ... Houston went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
