Mariners take a chance on Young

Peoria, AZ ( - The Seattle Mariners signed veteran right- handed pitcher Chris Young to a contract on Thursday.

No terms of the deal were disclosed by the team, but multiple reports state it's a one-year, guaranteed pact.

Young last appeared in the majors during the 2012 season, going 4-9 with a 4.15 earned run average in 20 starts for the New York Mets. He spent 2013 pitching for Triple-A Syracuse in the Nationals' farm system, going 1-2 with a 6.81 ERA, then signed a minor league deal with Washington back in February before being released on Wednesday.

Since breaking into the big leagues with Texas in 2004, the 34-year-old native of Dallas has compiled a 53-43 record and 3.79 ERA over 159 starts for the Rangers, Padres and Mets.

To make room on the roster, the Mariners designated left-handed hurler Bobby LaFromboise for assignment.
