Report: Cubs to sign P Hammel

(SportsNetwork.com) - Free agent pitcher Jason Hammel has agreed to a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, FoxSports.com reported Friday.

According to CBSSports.com, the deal is for a base salary of $6 million and includes $1 million in incentives and is pending the completion of a physical.

Hammel is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Baltimore Orioles in which he registered a 7-8 record and a 4.97 earned run average over 26 games, 23 of which were starts. The veteran righty posted a career-best 3.43 ERA while going 8-6 in 20 starts for the Orioles the previous year.

A two-time 10-game winner with Colorado from 2009-10, Hammel owns a 49-59 career mark with a 4.80 ERA over eight major league seasons with Tampa Bay, the Rockies and Baltimore.

The Cubs had been seeking to add an experienced arm to their starting rotation, with the club reportedly heavily involved in the bidding for Masahiro Tanaka before the Japanese star's recent signing with the New York Yankees.
