Steelers mark Spaeth for designated to return

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth was placed on the injured reserve/designated for return list due to a right foot injury that is expected to sideline the veteran until midseason.

Spaeth underwent surgery last month to repair a reported Lisfranc sprain in his foot. The six-year pro is eligible to return to practice following the sixth week of the upcoming regular season, and would be available to play in the Steelers' Week 9 matchup at New England on Nov. 3 at the earliest.

The 29-year-old blocking specialist, who spent his first four NFL seasons with Pittsburgh and rejoined the Steelers in March following a two-year stint with the Chicago Bears, had been slated to be the team's starting tight end until 2012 Pro Bowl selection Heath Miller returns from a torn ACL that will likely sideline him for the early portion of the 2013 campaign.

To fill the available roster spot, the Steelers signed undrafted rookie linebacker Terence Garvin off the practice squad.
