EKU shot a blistering 56 percent from the field in the first half, which was slightly better than VCU's 52 percent, but the Rams drained nine 3-pointers in the opening stanza and carried a 38-36 lead into the break.

The tightly-contested bout remained a one-possession contest for the majority of the second half. Trailing by a bucket with under three minutes to play, the Colonels took a 66-64 lead with 2:13 remaining following a pair of free throws by Cosey and a dunk by Lewis. The Rams tied the game with 1:04 left on a Johnson jumper, and after empty possessions by each team down the stretch, the game went to overtime.

VCU took an early lead in the extra session on a Brandenberg 3-pointer and held on to the advantage the rest of the way. EKU was just 1-of-5 from the floor in the overtime period.

VCU's bench outscored EKU's, 29-9.
