Jersey City, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Desi Washington knocked down the game- winning 3-pointer in the waning moments, as the Saint Peter's Peacocks edged the Fairfield Stags, 63-62, in an Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference thriller at the Yanitelli Center.
Washington led the Peacocks (12-16, 8-11 MAAC) with 16 points, while Jamel Fields and Marvin Dominique each chipping in with 12 points, with Dominique adding 10 rebounds to record the double-double.
For the Stags (6-24, 3-16), Amadou Sidibe led all scorers with 18 points to go along with 14 rebounds and Maurice Barrow scored 15 in the loss.
Saint Peter's was hot from the field to start the contest, connecting on 58.3 percent of its attempts, as the Peacocks went into halftime holding a 35-26 advantage. Fairfield was held to just 37 percent shooting from the floor, as the Stags missed all but one of their eight 3-point tries in the first half.
After the break the Stags found their stroke, knocking down 59.1 percent of their shots from the floor. A 17-1 run by Fairfield allowed the Stags to take the lead midway through the second half. Trailing by eight, 60-52, with 3:24 to play, the Peacocks scored six straight points to get within two with under two minutes to play. A pair of free throws by Sidibe with 45 seconds remaining extended the Stags lead back to four.
After a Quadir Welton layup cut the Peacock deficit again to two, KJ Rose missed a pair of free throws that would have made it a two-possession game with 20 seconds left in regulation, setting up Washington's game-winning heroics.
The Stags outrebounded the Peacocks, 29-25. They also finished with the edge in points in the paint, 28-26.
