Michigan C McGary sidelined indefinitely

Ann Arbor, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Michigan will be without the services of starting center Mitch McGary for the foreseeable future after the standout sophomore elected to undergo surgery on his ailing back.

McGary, a key contributor to the Wolverines' march to the championship game of last season's NCAA Tournament, has missed three of the team's first 11 contests of 2013-14 due to lingering back troubles.

"My back problems have been a daily challenge ever since late August," said McGary. "We have worked hard rehabbing the injury and I thought that everything was proceeding in the right direction until the last two weeks. I have consulted with my family, my coaches and our doctors and decided the best option now is to have surgery. This was a difficult decision to make because I want to be out there with my teammates. At the same time, I need to be healthy to give everything I can on the court and help my team."

Michigan did not provide a timetable for McGary's rehab or say whether he would return this season, stating only that he is expected to make a full recovery.

McGary averaged 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds during the Wolverines' NCAA Tournament run and 9.5 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds in eight games this season, shooting 54.5 percent from the field during his abbreviated sophomore campaign.

With McGary in and out of the lineup, the Wolverines have gotten off to a disappointing 7-4 start after beginning the season ranked seventh in the nation.
