Tokyo, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - Japan beat Canada 4-1 in their best-of-five opening-round Davis Cup tie.
Kei Nishikori opened Sunday's reverse singles with a victory over Frank Dancevic, giving Japan an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Canada.
Nishikori was ahead 6-2, 1-0 when Dancevic retired due to an abdominal injury on the indoor hardcourt at Ariake Coliseum.
Go Soeda claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Peter Polansky to complete a fine weekend for the Japanese.
Japan will next battle the Czech Republic-Netherlands victor in the quarterfinals in April.
Japan is now 6-0 all-time versus Canada in Davis Cup play, with their previous meeting occurring way back in 1938. This was the first-ever matchup outside of Montreal.
