Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 9, Minnesota 0
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Alexi Casilla smacked a fastball into right field and for a split-second, silence engulfed the 27,288 fans in attendance at Angel Stadium.
But Torii Hunter, a nine-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder, tracked the ball down at the warning track and cemented Jered Weaver's place in Angels history.
With his family and friends looking on, Weaver tossed the second MLB no- hitter in less than two weeks and the 10th one in franchise history, leading the Angels to a 9-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.
The White Sox's Philip Humber threw the 21st perfect game in MLB history on April 21 against Seattle.
"I was going to go through the wall on that last one," Hunter said of the final out. "I wanted it hit to me because I knew I was going to get it."
After Hunter secured the over-the-shoulder catch, the 29-year-old Southern California native put his hands over his head in disbelief and embraced with catcher Chris Iannetta before the rest of his teammates came over to mob him in the infield.
Weaver tipped his cap and waved to his family and friends in the crowd, while the rest of the jubilant home faithful broke into chants of "Weaver! Weaver! Weaver!"
"To have my family and friends here, it's an unbelievable night. It's surreal, it's an awesome moment," commented Weaver.
Weaver (4-0) completely overwhelmed Minnesota the entire night. He fanned nine while walking just one and threw 77 of his 121 pitches for strikes.
The All-Star right-hander was two blemishes away from a perfect game. Chris Parmelee reached on a strikeout passed ball with two outs in the second inning and Josh Willingham worked a two-out walk in the seventh.
"He worked great with Iannetta," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He changed speeds, he was relentless. He executed his stuff well and focused on making pitches."
Although Weaver didn't need much help from the offense, the Angels proceeded to score nine runs -- all in the first four frames -- on 15 hits in the finale of a three-game set.
Howie Kendrick was 4-for-4 with a three-run home run and three runs scored for Los Angeles, which has won four of its last five games.
Liam Hendriks (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 frames for the Twins, who have dropped nine of their last 10.
Kendrys Morales belted an RBI double in the opening frame to give the home team a 1-0 lead, and Los Angeles plated two more in the second on Mark Trumbo's run-scoring double and Erick Aybar's RBI single.
The Angels put three more runs on the board in each of the third and fourth innings.
In the third, Morales launched a solo shot over the wall in center field, while Trumbo singled in a run and Peter Bourjos registered an RBI double to make it 6-0.
Kendrick's three-run homer into right-center field concluded the scoring in the fourth.
But the night belonged to Weaver, who stated that the no-hitter entered his mind very early on in the contest.
"I started thinking about it in the third inning," Weaver said. "It's tough not to think about it."
The closest call for Weaver came in the eighth frame. Trevor Plouffe lined one down the left-field line that just hooked foul into the seats.
In the ninth, Weaver quickly retired Jamey Carroll on a fly ball to left field. He then struck out Denard Span looking before registering the final out on Casilla's flyout to right field, giving Los Angeles its second no- hitter in less than a year -- Ervin Santana tossed one on July 27 at Cleveland.
"For the most part he kept us off-balance, we took some pretty ugly swings and he had a lot of strikeouts," Span said.
Of the 10 no-hitters in club history, the fireballing Nolan Ryan has four...This was the 274th no-hitter in MLB history...The Twins haven't had a hit in the last 15 innings...The Angels were 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
