NBA Game Summary - Dallas at New Orleans
(Friday, January 10th)
Final Score: Dallas 107, New Orleans 90
New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Monta Ellis tallied 23 points and eight assists as the Dallas Mavericks routed the New Orleans Pelicans, 107-90, in the front end of a home-and-home from New Orleans Arena.
Dirk Nowitzki paced Dallas with 24 points while Jae Crowder and Jose Calderon added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
"We did a great job. We have been really inconsistent with that this year, but tonight I think it was extremely important on the road. Hopefully we can duplicate it again tomorrow," said Mavs guard Vince Carter.
The Mavericks, who improved to 2-0 against the Pelicans this season, will host New Orleans on Saturday.
Eric Gordon shot 9-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the stripe to lead all scorers with 27 points for the Pelicans, who played for the first time this season without Jrue Holiday. Holiday, a 2013 All-Star with Philadelphia, was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right tibia and will be sidelined indefinitely. New Orleans is already without sharpshooter Ryan Anderson (neck).
Anthony Davis added 21 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in the setback, while Austin Rivers made the most of his extended time with 12 points and a team-high four assists.
Dallas scored the game's first five points and never trailed, leading 31-24 after the first period and 62-49 at halftime.
New Orleans was kept off the scoreboard for the first 4:05 of the second half, failing to cut into its deficit as Dallas built a 20-point lead on Samuel Dalembert's jump hook at 6:55 of the third. Out of a timeout, Calderon drilled a 3-pointer, and the rout was on.
"They got whatever they wanted on the offensive end. Dirk, Monta, Vince [Carter], [Jose] Calderon, all of those guys could just do whatever they wanted on any play, as if they were just going through a script," said Rivers.
Dallas has won the last five meetings ... The Pelicans outscored the Mavericks 52-32 in the paint and 20-4 on second chance opportunities ... Brian Roberts made his first start of the season in Holiday's place and scored nine points on 4-of-11 shooting.
