Sixers' Carter-Williams named NBA's top rookie
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Philadelphia 76ers point guard Michael Carter-Williams has been named the NBA's Rookie of the Year.
Carter-Williams, the 11th overall pick of last year's draft out of Syracuse, averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds. He joined Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvin Adams (1975-76) as the only players since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in those categories.
Only Robertson and Magic Johnson averaged at least 16.0 points, 6.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds as rookies before Carter-Williams, who also led all rookies in steals with 1.86 per game.
Carter-Williams received 104 of a possible 124 first-place votes and a total of 569 points from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada to outdistance Orlando's Victor Oladipo for the award.
Oladipo picked up 16 first-place votes and a total of 364 points, followed by Utah's Trey Burke, who earned one first-place vote and 96 points in the balloting.
Carter-Williams is first 76er honored as the top rookie since Allen Iverson in 1996-97.
