Grizzlies top Kings for fifth straight win
Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Conley scored a game-high 25 points as the Memphis Grizzlies edged the Sacramento Kings 91-90 at FedExForum.
Courtney Lee added 17 points, Marc Gasol had 16 points and four blocks and Zach Randolph finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Grizzlies, winners in five straight.
"We got stops on seven of the last eight possessions. Going down the stretch the intensity was good. We were pretty solid in there," said Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger.
DeMarcus Cousins scored 22 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, and Rudy Gay, who spent 6 1/2 seasons in Memphis before he was traded to Toronto last season, added 19 for the Kings, who have dropped two of their last three.
"It was definitely a type of game Memphis wanted to play. I feel like we had good tempo in the beginning, but they got their tempo in the second half," Cousins said. "They controlled the game down the stretch, that is where it hurt us."
Isaiah Thomas' halfcourt alley-oop to Derrick Williams put Sacramento in front 86-79, but Memphis used a 12-2 run to take an 91-88 edge with 54 seconds left.
Gasol got the sequence started with a turnaround jumper and later found Tayshaun Prince with a backdoor pass to cut it to one possession.
Gay slammed home a Cousins miss with 38 ticks showing, but the Kings were held without another shot the rest of the way.
Sacramento led 21-20 after 12 minutes, but the Grizzlies took a 44-42 lead into the break.
Neither side built a lead larger than three in a back-and-forth third frame until a pair of Conley free throws with 31 seconds left. The Kings, however, managed to scored the final four points of the stanza to make it 72-71 entering the fourth quarter.
Memphis closes a brief two-game homestand with New Orleans on Monday ... The Grizzlies edged the Kings in points in the paint, 42-40 ... The Kings continue a four-game road trip Sunday in Oklahoma City before visiting New Orleans and Houston next week.
