GAME NOTES: The Canisius Golden Griffins take a three-game winning streak to West Long Branch, as they prepare to face the Monmouth Hawks in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the MAC.
Canisius has won three in a row and four of its last five games, improving to a strong 6-1 MAAC record. It's the second time Monmouth and Canisius will clash within a week, as the Golden Griffins defeated the Hawks, 87-67, last Sunday. Canisius beat Iona, 85-83, in its most recent outing.
Monmouth has lost its last two games, including the first round to Canisius, and three of its last four overall. The Hawks are 2-5 in their first season as a member of the MAAC. Monmouth was also beaten by Quinnipiac, 70-61, Thursday.
Before last Sunday, the Golden Griffins and Hawks had never met on the court before.
Canisius was able to hold Iona to just two points in the final 4:52 of their clash Friday, as the Golden Griffins went on to win by a slim margin. Billy Baron netted a game-high 29 points, while dishing out eight assists and grabbing four rebounds for the Golden Griffins. Chris Perez scored 17 points, and Zach Lewis added 14. Jordan Heath scored seven points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds in the win.
Baron continues to be one of the top scorers in the country for Canisius, netting 23.2 ppg on 44.2 percent shooting from the floor. Baron has also racked up a team-high 91 assists and 25 steals on the year, and pulls down a healthy 4.9 rpg average. Heath is second on the team in scoring and second in team rebounding, netting 11.6 ppg and grabbing 5.7 rpg through the team's 18 contests. Canisius average 75.6 ppg this season.
With the game tied 47-47 and just over 10 minutes to play at TD Bank Sports Center, Quinnipiac was able to rattle off a 10-2 run against Monmouth that set the Hawks back in a hole from which they could not dig out. Deon Jones scored a team-high 16 points for Monmouth, grabbing 11 rebounds in the process of recording his second career double-double. Andrew Nicholas contributed 14 points, while Josh James and Zac Tillman each netted 11 points for the Hawks.
Jones, the Towson transfer, leads the team this season in scoring at 15.3 ppg, and tops the team in rebounding with a 6.5 rpg mark. Nicholas comes in at second this season in scoring with 13.4 ppg, while Justin Robinson is third at 9.4 ppg and a team-best 68 total assists. The Hawks average 71 ppg on 41.6 percent shooting.
Monmouth needs more time to adjust to its new conference, and having to face Canisius again for the second time in a week, especially after a 20-point rout the first time around, is a daunting task.
