GAME NOTES: A pair of Southern Conference foes coming off overtime losses get together Saturday as the Furman Paladins visit the Citadel Bulldogs at McAlister Field House.
Both teams are also winless in conference play.
Furman had a chance to beat Georgia Southern in regulation on Thursday but could not get a shot off before time expired. Georgia Southern then controlled the extra session and pulled out the 88-80 win to deny the Paladins a long- awaited conference win.
Stephen Croone led the way with 26 points but also committed seven turnovers in Furman's fifth straight loss. Kendrec Ferrara finished with 21 points, Adonis Rwabigwi scored 12 and Larry Wideman chipped in with 10.
Croone is the SoCon's second-leading scorer at 19.9 ppg, but he is turning the ball over almost four times per game (3.9). Wideman and Ferrara are contributing 10.9 and 10.1 ppg, respectively and William Gates (9.6) is the only other player averaging more than six ppg for Furman.
The Citadel, meanwhile, squandered an 11-point halftime lead against UNC Greensboro and wound up losing by a 69-65 final on Thursday. The Bulldogs also had a shot at winning in regulation, but Matt Van Scyoc missed a 3-point try at the buzzer.
The Bulldogs can thank missing half of their 18 free-throw attempts for their seventh straight loss. Ashton Moore had a team-high 21 points, Van Scyoc registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Quinton Marshall chipped in with 13 points.
Van Scyoc leads the Bulldogs with 14.9 ppg, while Brian White is next with 13.5 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg. Moore rounds out the double figure scorers with 11.5 ppg for the Citadel, which nets only 69.7 ppg.
Saturday's meeting is the 199th between the programs, and the Citadel rolled to a sweep of last year's home-and-home series. Both teams need this win for any kind of momentum, and since Croone will be the best player on the floor, the edge goes to Furman.
