GAME NOTES: The Morehead State Eagles will try to continue their winning ways when they host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday night at Johnson Arena.
Morehead State has won three straight, most recently defeating league rival Eastern Illinois in an 85-77 final last Saturday. Senior Chad Posthumus registered team highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles, who made 25-of-26 free throws to secure the win.
Sophomore Brent Arrington, who netted 12 points, and junior Luka Pajkovic, who posted 10, also finished in double figures for Morehead State, which used a 10-2 run more than midway through the second to take the lead for good.
The Eagles, who scored 26 of their final 46 points from the foul line, closed the game on a 33-19 spurt.
Posthumus, who leads the OVC with nine double-doubles this season, averages 11.1 ppg and 12.4 rpg. Angelo Warner leads Morehead State with 17.3 ppg, as the squad scores an average of 79.5 ppg. Arrington (11.4 ppg) rounds out the unit's double-digit scorers.
Eastern Kentucky is seeking to stop a two-game losing streak. On Wednesday night, the Colonels suffered their first home setback of the season in a 77-64 final versus the Murray State Racers.
The Racers scored 14 of the first 17 points and never looked back. EKU rallied to even the score at 21-21, but could never take the lead. Murray State regained control with a 10-2 run at the end of the half to take a 38-29 cushion at intermission.
Junior Corey Walden paced the Colonels with a season-high 24 points, as the team shot under 50 percent from the field for the first time in five games.
Tarius Johnson chipped in with a season-high 16 points for Eastern Kentucky, which comes into tonight's contest sporting a 4-4 record in true road games this season.
EKU's top scoring threat, Glenn Cosey, was held to a season-low five points in the recent loss to Murray State. For the season, the senior is averaging 19.1 ppg. Walden adds 13.1 ppg for the Colonels, who average 78.8 ppg while yielding only 69.7 ppg.
Morehead State has been playing well of late, winning its first two conference games and averaging nearly 86 points over that stretch. While EKU is among the leaders in the OVC in scoring defense (69.2 ppg), the team has allowed 80 or more points in its previous two tilts -- both in conference. Expect Morehead State to continue its roll tonight.
