Long Beach State has struggled this season to a 5-12 record, losing three of its last four contests. The 49ers are coming off a 64-51 defeat at the hands of UC Santa Barbara Thursday.
Cal Poly hasn't exactly shined this season either, at times going on three- game and four-game losing streaks. At the present time, the Mustangs have won three in a row, including a 62-52 victory over Cal State Northridge. They'll try to make it four, and a perfect 4-0 in conference play, when they host LBSU.
Long Beach State has a 39-29 all-time series advantage against Cal Poly. There two programs will meet again this season on Feb. 15 at Long Beach State.
UC Santa Barbara shot 50.9 percent from the floor in Thursday's win over Long Beach State, 64-51. The 49ers only trailed UCSB, 26-24, going into the half. But Santa Barbara hit 56.7 percent of its shots from the floor in the second frame, downing LBSU. Mike Caffey was the only 49ers player to net double-digit points on Thursday, scoring 21 on 9-of-20 shooting. Caffey added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. LBSU shot a dismal 29.9 percent from the floor in the contest.
Tyler Lamb, who scored just five points against UCSB Thursday, leads the 49ers this season in scoring, averaging 16.4 ppg in just seven games played. Caffey is right behind him with 16.3 ppg and a team-best 73 assists and 28 steals. Dan Jennings leads the 49ers in rebounding at 7.4 rpg with an impressive 20 blocked shots. LBSU averages 66.4 ppg, and allows 72.2 ppg to opponents.
Cal Poly won its 16th consecutive home Big West Conference matchup Thursday against Cal State Northridge, improving to a perfect 3-0 in conference play this season. Dave Nwaba paced the Mustangs with 16 points, adding five rebounds to his stat total. Nwaba hit 10-of-14 attempts from the free-throw line in the contest. Kyle Odister chipped in 14 points, shooting a perfect 4- of-4 from 3-point range.
Chris Eversley, who had nine points Thursday night, still leads the team in scoring this season with 13.8 ppg on 42.3 percent shooting from the floor. Eversley also paces the Mustangs with 7.1 rpg, and is third on the team in assists with 30 total this year. Nwaba nets 12.3 ppg, good for second on the team, with a Cal Poly-high 21 steals. The Mustangs average just 65.9 ppg, but allow only 64.3 ppg to opponents.
Cal Poly has the secret to winning home conference games, and it doesn't plan on sharing that secret anytime soon. The Mustangs have the pieces defensively to rise above Long Beach State in this one.
