NCAA Game Summary - Northern Illinois at Kent State

(Wednesday, January 29th)

Final Score: Northern Illinois 50, Kent State 49

Kent, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Travon Baker drained two free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining to lift the Northern Illinois Huskies over the Kent State Golden Flashes, 50-49, in a Mid-American Conference tilt at the MAC Center.

The Huskies (8-11, 2-5 MAC) were led by Aksel Bolin with 14 points, while Baker added 11 points and Jordan Threloff chipped in with 10.

Darren Goodson finished with 10 points to lead the Golden Flashes (11-9, 2-5), who have now lost four straight.

NIU shot 42.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range. Despite shooting just 36 percent from the floor, Kent State carried a 28-21 lead into intermission thanks in part to a 7-of-10 showing at the free-throw line.

After the break, both teams struggled from the field. The Golden Flashes shot 33.3 percent from the floor, while the Huskies made just 28.6 percent of their field goal tries. Trailing by 14 early in the final period, 40-26, NIU went on a 20-5 run to eventually pull ahead with just over three minutes to play. The teams traded leads in the final minutes, with the Golden Flashes going ahead 49-48 with nine seconds remaining, but Baker was fouled on the ensuing possession and put the Huskies ahead with his two free throws. Brewer had a chance to win it for the home team, but his desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

The Huskies had the edge in points in the paint, 23-16. They also outrebounded the Golden Flashes, 35-27.
