Venus rallies to beat Serena

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Venus Williams fought back to beat her sister Serena 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-3 and reach the Rogers Cup final.

The 34-year-old Venus snapped a five-match losing streak against the 32-year- old Serena, posting her first win in the head-to-head series since 2009 in Dubai. The younger sibling still owns a 14-11 edge overall.

The world No. 1 Serena, the defending champion, had won 14 straight Rogers Cup matches after victories at the 2011 and 2013 tournaments in Toronto. She missed the 2012 event.

Serena swatted a whopping 19 aces, but committed nine double faults and had her serve broken four times.

Venus broke to begin the match, but a backhand error gave the tiebreak to Serena. Venus earned two breaks in the second set and broke again to go up 4-2 in the third set when Serena netted a backhand.

Serena sent a return into the net, giving Venus the win on her second match point.

Venus advanced to her third final of the year. She captured her 45th career title at Dubai in February and was the runner-up at the season-opening event at Auckland.

In Sunday's final at this hardcourt tournament, Venus will face the winner of the other semifinal between third-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska and Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
