Avs acquire G Berra from Flames
Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Avalanche have obtained goaltender Reto Berra from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the team announced prior to Wednesday's trade deadline.
Berra posted a 9-17-2 record with a 2.95 goals-against average in 29 games for the Flames this season, his first in the NHL. The Swiss native had spent the past seven seasons in the top-level league in his home country prior to signing a one-year contract with Calgary last April.
The 27-year-old joins a crowded goaltender situation in Colorado, which already has Semyon Varlamov and veteran Jean-Sebastian Giguere on the roster, though Giguere is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at season's end.
To replace Berra on the active roster, the Flames recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from Abbotsford of the American Hockey League. MacDonald appeared in seven games for Calgary earlier this season, going 3-3-1 with a 3.17 GAA.
