Aucoin announces retirement

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Aucoin, who patrolled NHL blue lines for 17 seasons, announced his retirement on Tuesday.

"Having the opportunity to realize my childhood dream of playing in the NHL, and being able to have played professional hockey for 20 seasons, has been an incredible experience," said Aucoin in a release sent through the NHLPA. "I really enjoyed playing with and against some of the best players in the game, and getting the chance to play in front of such great hockey fans. Thanks to my family, teammates, friends, fans and everyone in the hockey community who helped me in my career. I will look back on it with fondness and pride for the rest of my life."

The 40-year-old native of Ottawa participated in 36 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, totaling four assists with a minus-8 rating.

A fifth-round draft pick back in 1992, Aucoin made his NHL debut with Vancouver during the lockout-shortened 1995 campaign after a year with Boston University and two in the AHL. He skated in 1,108 regular-season games for the Canucks, Lightning, Islanders, Blackhawks, Flames and Coyotes, picking up 121 goals and 399 points with 793 penalty minutes.

Aucoin leaves the game holding a triple distinction: scoring his first NHL goal on his first shot, his first playoff goal on his first shot in his first postseason appearance and a goal on the first shot of his only All-Star selection in 2004.
