Description: There is considerable doubt about whether five-time Pro Bowl free safety Darren Sharper will be back in New Orleans for a third season in 2011. SOURCE: FOX SPORTS
Insight: The emergence of Malcolm Jenkins as the starter and the fact that Sharper has had more injuries lately will definitely weigh on the decision of both parties involved. Sharper would definitely like to play one more campaign, but it might not be his decision to make. At age 35, Sharper thinks he has enough left in the tank, certainly in terms of football "smarts," to be at least an effective nickel safety for a team, and is especially seeking out a contender.

Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports Sharper (knee) will see increased snaps in Week 8 against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Sharper played just 17 total snaps in his season debut in Week 7, so a fairly significant increase can be expected. (

Description: Jeff Duncan of The New Orleans Times Picayune suggests Sharper (knee) may not be given back his starting job when he is activated from the PUP list.
Insight: Malcom Jenkins has played well at free safety for the Saints, but if Sharper is healthy enough he should have a significant role in the Saints' secondary. (

Description: As recently expected, Sharper will begin the season on the PUP list, making him ineligible for the first six games. Second-year man Malcolm Jenkins will start in his place.
Insight: Sharper can only hope that Jenkins doesn't do enough to keep the job all year. IDP owners should forget about the veteran, who is too inconsistent a producer when healthy. The absence of his big-play ability hurts the Saints team defense, too. (

Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports there is a growing possibility that Sharper (knee) could start the season on the PUP list.
Insight: Malcolm Jenkins is in line to take Sharper's place as the Saints' starting free safety. (Rapid

Description: Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times Picayune reports, via Twitter, that Sharper (knee) is aiming to return for the Saints' final preseason game.

Description: There is speculation that the Saints could place DB Darren Sharper (knee) on the PUP list to start the regular season. SOURCE: NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE
Insight: The team has solid depth at the free safety position, including a capable Malcolm Jenkins. If the team goes ahead and sidelines Sharper, it will give him a much better chance at helping the team in another expected playoff run. However, this news does nothing to help fantasy owners.

Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports Sharper (microfracture surgery) is in danger of losing his starting job to Malcom Jenkins
Insight: Sharper is coming off microfracture surgery on his knee, and at age 35 may lose some of his burst. There is no definite timetable for his return to action. (Rapid

Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports Sharper (microfracture surgery) hopes to have his knee brace removed at some point during training camp.
Insight: Sharper has no timetable for returning to practice, so his status for Week 1 has to be considered up in the air. (
5/4/2010 11:42:00 AM
Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports Sharper (left knee) said he's "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from microfracture surgery on his knee.
Insight: Sharper reportedly compared his surgery to Saints' RB Reggie Bush's from last year and Bush was ready for June minicamp. But Bush is also significantly younger than Sharper is. His status for Week 1 has to be in doubt at this point. (
5/3/2010 9:20:00 PM
Description: Expanding on a previous item, Pro Football reports the Saints have signed Sharper to a one-year deal.
Insight: Given the report he had microfracture surgery on his knee in March, it's not a big surprise the Saints ended up bringing Sharper back since he did not garner much interest on the free agent market. The 34-year old is coming off a nine-interception season in 2009, and he seems to be a good fit for the Saints' defense. (
5/3/2010 9:14:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, via Twitter, thart Sharper (knee) had microfracture surgery on his knee this offseason.
Insight: It had been widely reported Sharper had knee surgery in March, but it was believed to be arthroscopic in nature. He only recently began to take free agent visits due to recovery from the surgery, and it's not a guarantee he'll be ready for Week 1 with this news. (
5/2/2010 6:25:00 PM
Description: Free agent Darren Sharper left Jacksonville without a contract on Thursday.
Insight: Sharper may have overestimated his value in the market. He will most likely re-sign in New Orleans. (
4/29/2010 10:38:00 AM
Description: ESPN reports the Cowboys have no interest in Sharper at the moment.
Insight: Sharper is now recovered from knee surgery and is making his free agent rounds. The Cowboys do have a need at free safety after releasing Ken Hamlin. Sharper could easily still return to the Saints. (
4/28/2010 11:06:00 PM
Description: Free agent Darren Sharper will visit the Jaguars on Wednesday.
Insight: Signing with the Jaguars would make sense as Sharper, even at 35, represents a big upgrade to their defensive secondary. He?s coming off a 9 interception season where he returned 3 of them for touchdowns. (
4/15/2010 9:55:00 PM
Description: The New Orleans Times Picayune reports Sharper (left knee) has began running after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in early March.
Insight: Sharper may now begin to take some free agent visits, though a return to the Saints still seems very likely. (
3/22/2010 1:00:00 PM
Description: Peter King of speculates that Sharper will not sign with a team until July.
Insight: Sharper underwent knee surgery shortly before free agency started, and is reportedly still on crutches. So it would be a good move to wait a while longer to work out for teams. (
3/14/2010 10:49:00 PM
Description: The New Orleans Time Picayune reports that Saints' GM Mickey Loomis said Sharper is asking for too much money in contract talks.
Insight: Sharper recentlyhad knee surgery and can't pass a physical with the Saints or any other team right now. That hurts his leverage in contract talks. (
3/11/2010 1:36:00 AM
