Description: 2013 could be a big year for Patriots running back Shane Vereen reports ESPN Boston's Field Yates.
Insight: With Danny Woodhead out of the equation (he signed a two-year deal with the Chargers on Friday), Vereen will move up to second on New England's running back depth chart. Vereen is expected to inherit Woodhead's old role as the team's passing down back. He should also see a decent amount of third down touches throughout the year. Vereen won't be a 1,000-yard threat like his teammate Stevan Ridley but he's certainly a player to keep an eye on in PPR formats.

Description: New England halfback Shane Vereen stole the show Sunday in a win over Houston. He racked up a combined 124 yards rushing and receiving en route to his first career three-touchdown game.
Insight: Two of Vereen's touchdowns were of the receiving variety. The other was on a one-yard run. He should continue to be heavily involved in New England's offense, especially now that receiving weapon Rob Gronkowksi is out for the rest of the postseason with a broken arm.

Description: Patriots running back Shane Vereen's reps will increase as he stays healthy, not as others get injured, coach Bill Belichick said, according to CSN New England. Vereen got his most reps of the season Sunday with Brandon Bolden absent from the lineup with a knee injury.
Insight: Belichick praised Vereen's understanding of the game and ability to get open and find space. It sounds like the running back is going to continue to see time at running back even when Bolden returns. That could cloud the value of Stevan Ridley.

Description: Patriots running back Shane Vereen is questionable for Sunday's game against Arizona with a foot injury.
Insight: Given Stevan Ridley's huge performance in Week 1 (21-125-1), Vereen's fantasy value is only as a handcuff at best. The Patriots backfield is Ridley's now with a little help from Danny Woodhead.

Description: The Boston Globe has hinted that Patriots running back Shane Vereen is gaining ground on projected starter Stevan Ridley.
Insight: Ridley has had trouble holding onto the ball in practice, allowing Vereen to see more first team reps than he did during the first couple weeks of practice. Ridley was never a lock for the job so expect this back and forth running back battle to last all the way up until the start of the regular season.

Description: Patriots running backs Shane Vereen looked strong while working with the second team in the preseason opener against the Saints. Vereen rushed 11 times for 64 yards and caught to balls for 17 yards.
Insight: Stevan Ridley ran with the first team (8-for-40), but Vereen's performance could get him some work with Brady & Co. We still don't see much fantasy value for Vereen in 2012, barring injury, as he's part of a backfield which includes Ridley, Danny Woodhead and Brandon Bolden.

Description: Patriots running backs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley figure to get the bulk of the rushing attempts this season in New England. Joseph Addai is thought of more as an insurance policy and Danny Woodhead is almost exclusively a receiving back.
Insight: Whether Vereen or Ridley can do enough damage in the limited opportunites to be fantasy-worthy is another question given the team's propensity to trust Tom Brady's arm in almost every situation.
