Description: Pittsburgh will hand the ball to right-hander Edinson Volquez Sunday versus St. Louis. SOURCE: Dan Zangrilli, 93.7 The Fan
Insight: Volquez tossed two innings of shutout ball Thursday in his season debut. His 5.71 ERA in 2013 was among the worst in the major leagues.

Description: Edinson Volquez is expected to land a spot in the Pirates rotation, according to Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Volquez has a 11 ERA and a 2.11 WHIP in nine innings this spring after going 9-12 with a 5.71 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP last year. There's no reason to draft him in any leagues. Jeff Locke will be bumped to the bullpen or Triple-A.

Description: The Pirates inked righthander Edinson Volquez to a one-year deal on Wednesday. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: He'll earn $5 million next season. Volquez hasn't been fantasy relevant since 2007 when he won 17 games for Cincinnati. In 33 appearances last season, Volquez went 9-12 with a 5.71 ERA. He figures to be a back of the rotation starter/long relief option for Pittsburgh in 2014.
10/11/2013 2:13:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles starter Edinson Volquez has been added to the Dodgers NLCS roster.
Insight: Volquez is probably just insurance for Hyun-Jin Ryu who struggled in Game 3 against Atlanta and Ricky Nolasco who gave up 17 earned runs over his last three starts.
9/2/2013 10:09:00 PM
Description: Edinson Volquez will start for the Dodgers Wednesday against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Insight: The team will push Hyun-Jin Ryu back to Friday to give him extra rest. Volquez has a career 8.39 ERA and a 2.13 WHIP in 34 1/3 innings at Coors Field (14.92 ERA there this season) and should be avoided in all leagues.

Description: Former Reds and Padres starter Edinson Volquez has agreed to join the Dodgers. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: There were reports earlier in the day that L.A. had been zeroing in on Volquez so this doesn't come as much of a surprise. There's a chance Volquez could take over for Chris Capuano at the end of the rotation but his impact from a fantasy perspective should still be minimal.

Description: Free agent starting pitcher Edinson Volquez is on the Dodgers' radar. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Volquez just pitched himself out of a job with the Padres and now the Dodgers want him? It's not the craziest thing we've ever heard, but it's right up there. Volquez (9-10, 6.01 ERA) would give the Dodgers some depth but he wouldn't be much of an upgrade over current fifth starter Chris Capuano (4-7, 4.74).
Cold8/24/2013 8:03:00 PM
Description: The Padres have designated righthander Edinson Volquez for assignment.
Insight: Volquez failed to make it out of the first inning Friday against the Cubs, allowing five hits and six runs (five earned) before his departure. He won't have trouble finding a new team but how can fantasy owners trust someone with an ERA over six?
8/13/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: Padres manager Bud Black said that Edinson Volquez will remain in the rotation for the time being even though he possesses the highest ERA in baseball among qualified starters. SOURCE:
Insight: Volquez is 8-10 with a 5.80 ERA in 136 2/3 innings this season. He has a 4.13 FIP and his BB/9 is below 5.00 for the first time since 2008, but the right-hander has been subpar with men on base. Volquez' strand rate is just 64 percent because he has allowed a 24.8 percent line-drive rate and 32 extra-base hits with runners on.
6/12/2013 8:13:00 PM
Description: Padres righthander Edinson Volquez evened his record to 5-5 with a win over the Braves on Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Volquez (5.87 ERA in 14 starts) has been a mess most of this season but Wednesday he had the goods. In seven innings of work, he surrendered just one run on six hits, walking three with nine strikeouts. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Giants.
5/25/2013 3:32:00 PM
Description: According to Jesse Sanchez from, Edinson Volquez's next start has been pushed back to Tuesday.
Insight: Volquez was scheduled to start on Monday. The Padres haven't announced a starter for Monday yet but Sanchez suggested that it could be Clayton Richard (0-4, 8.54 ERA).
5/10/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Padres starter Edinson Volquez allowed two runs on three hits in six innings Friday against the Rays in a no decision.
Insight: Volquez came in having won three straight starts and he exited with the lead, but Dale Thayer blew it. Volquez, as usual, has walked a ton of batters (20 BB in 43 2/3 IP), but unlike last year he also has given up a lot of hits (48) while striking out just 24 batters.
6/24/2012 8:36:00 PM
Description: Padres starter Edinson Volquez shut out Seattle on four hits in 6 2/3 innings Sunday to improve to 4-7. Volquez walked three and struck out four.
Insight: Volquez (4-7, 3.82 ERA) has an 80/54 K/BB ratio in 93 2/3, so he's too risky to start unless he's facing a weak-hitting opponent at home.
5/12/2012 10:17:00 PM
Description: Edinson Volquez beat the Phillies and Roy Halladay on Saturday to improve to 2-2 on the season. Volquez threw six innings of one-run ball, giving up six hits and striking out five.
Insight: Volquez has reverted to his past dominance this season, his first with San Diego. The righty has posted a 2.79 ERA, and though the walks are still there, he's limited the damage by allowing just a .201 BAA.
4/27/2012 10:43:00 AM
Description: Edinson Volquez had his best start as a Padre on Thursday night, throwing seven innings on one-run ball and giving up just three hits with one walks while striking out seven against Washington.
Insight: Volquez is still winless despite pitching mostly well this season. On Thursday, he showed what he can do when he consistently pumps the strike zone.
4/18/2012 3:55:00 PM
Description: Edinson Volquez is 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA in his first three starts with the Padres this season.
Insight: Volquez does have 17 strikeouts in 17 innings, but he walks too many batters to be a must-start pitcher. Volquez is currently carrying a BB/9 rate of 6.35 and a WHIP of 1.53, so save yourself the headache and move on. He's four years removed from his only viable fantasy season, so perhaps it's time to admit that that season was an aberration.
4/5/2012 8:57:00 PM
Description: Edinson Volquez tossed five innings in the Padres Opening Day tilt with the Dodgers. Volquez gave up three hits, three runs (two earned), walked four and struck out seven.
Insight: Volquez can't get over the control issues that have plagued him throughout his career, even during his breakout 2008 season. He walked 65 in 108 2/3 innings last season. Hopefully Petco Park can corral some of those long fly balls (19 HR allowed in 2011) and prevent them from becoming three-run homers.
4/1/2012 3:01:00 PM
Description: Edinson Volquez will be the Padres' Opening Day starter when they take on the Dodgers this Thursday at Petco Park.
Insight: Fantasy owners can't seem to shake Volquez' brilliant 2008 season (17-6, 3.21 ERA) from their memories, continuing to waste a draft pick on him year after year. The fact is, Volquez hasn't been effective in fantasy for quite some time and last year he was downright awful (5-7, 5.71). Maybe pitching at Petco, a notorious pitcher's park, will help Volquez some, but we're still not convinced that he's really back.
7/6/2011 2:35:00 AM
Description: Reds SP Edinson Volquez was rocked for six earned runs on seven hits in just over five innings of work as the Reds were slaughtered by their rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-1 Tuesday night.
Insight: Volquez allowed two early runs in the first inning followed by three more in the 5th and one more in the 6th before giving way to Sam LeCure. Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman each took him deep before his departure in the 6th.
6/8/2011 9:32:00 AM
Description: Volquez is looking like his old self again and on Tuesday night he only allowed 1 ER through seven innings of work against the Cubs. Volquez gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
Insight: It looks like the time spent at Triple A Louisville may have been a wake up call and Volquez could still be a good buy low option.
