National League Game Summary - Atlanta at Cincinnati
(Thursday, May 24th)
Final Score: Cincinnati 6, Atlanta 3
Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Devin Mesoraco belted his first career grand
slam and the Cincinnati Reds completed a four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves
at home for the first time in 32 years with a 6-3 win Thursday night at Great
American Ball Park.
Drew Stubbs added a solo home run for the Reds, who extended their season-high
winning streak to six games while notching their first four-game sweep against
a visiting Braves team since April 9-13, 1980 at Riverfront Stadium.
Homer Bailey (3-3) gave up a two-run homer to Atlanta's Michael Bourn, one of
four hits allowed by the right-hander in six innings of work.
Juan Francisco also homered for the Braves, while Randall Delgado (2-5)
dropped his fifth straight decision after being tagged for four runs on seven
hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Todd Frazier, who hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday
to give Cincinnati a 2-1 victory, opened the scoring in the fourth by plating
Chris Heisey with a one-out double.
Atlanta responded with some two-out damage in the next frame. Delgado kept the
top of the fifth alive with a single and Bourn followed with his third homer
of the series, a drive over the right-field wall.
But the Reds moved back in front on Mesoraco's sixth-inning blast.
"The inning unraveled a little bit on [Delgado]," said Braves manager Fredi
Gonzalez.
Delgado issued a leadoff walk to Brandon Phillips and another one to Frazier
around a one-out Heisey single, which loaded the bases.
Kris Medlen replaced Delgado and Mesoraco launched the reliever's third pitch,
a 2-0 fastball, down the left-field line to put Cincinnati up 5-2.
"You always want to be in that situation, where there are guys on base, and I
got myself in a good count and got a good pitch to hit," Mesoraco said.
Francisco and Stubbs exchanged home runs in the seventh before Logan Ondrusek
earned his second save of the season by getting Francisco to ground into a
game-ending double play.
Game Notes
